Fall Refresh: The Artistry of Tox, Filler & Great Skin

There is something about September that makes us want to reset everything. The closets get reorganized. The kids go back to school. We suddenly decide we are going to become the person who meal preps on Sundays. And, naturally, we start looking in the mirror thinking… “Okay. What happened to my face this summer?”

Between sun exposure, travel, late nights, dehydration, and approximately 47 outdoor activities, your skin may be asking for a little attention. Fall is actually one of my favorite times of year to take a step back, assess the face as a whole, and create a plan for the months ahead.

And this is where the artistry of tox, filler, and skincare comes in.

Hard truth: tox is not about looking frozen. One of my biggest goals with neuromodulators is not to make you look like you had something done. It’s to make you look rested, refreshed, and like you—but on your best day.

Tox can soften dynamic lines and help prevent them from becoming more etched into the skin over time. But the artistry comes from knowing where to treat, how much to use, and—just as importantly—where NOT to treat.

More is not always more. In fact, sometimes the most beautiful result is the one where nobody can quite figure out why you look so good. That is the goal.

With filler, I want all of us to start thinking about the architecture of the face, not volume replacement. Filler has gotten a bad reputation because we've all seen the occasional “what happened here?” result. But beautifully placed filler isn't about making a face bigger. It is about structure, proportion, balance, and restoration.

As we age, we naturally lose collagen, bone support, fat volume, and soft-tissue structure. Strategic filler can help restore some of that support—whether that means adding subtle cheek structure, improving lip definition, supporting the lower face, or softening the appearance of certain shadows. The best filler results don't necessarily make you look “filled.” They make your face look more balanced.

And this is where experience matters. Your face isn't a coloring book where we just fill in every line we see. Facial anatomy, movement, proportions, skin quality, and your individual goals all have to be considered. Sometimes the answer is filler. Sometimes it's tox. Sometimes it's skincare. And sometimes the answer is “You actually don't need anything injected right now.” Yes, I said it.

And then there’s skincare. Because here's the part I will say over and over: Injectables can enhance your face, but they cannot replace good skin. You can have the most beautifully placed filler and perfectly dosed tox in the world, but if your skin is dull, uneven, sun-damaged, or lacking in texture, we're leaving a lot on the table. This is why fall is such a great time to revisit your skincare routine.

And if you aren't using a retinoid, this is your sign. Enter: AlphaRet.

One of my favorite retinol products is Skinbetter Science AlphaRet.

Retinoids are one of the most well-studied ingredients in skincare for improving the appearance of fine lines, texture, pigmentation, and overall skin quality. The problem? Traditional retinoids can sometimes come with the dreaded adjustment period—dryness, irritation, peeling, redness… essentially your skin throwing a tiny tantrum. AlphaRet was designed to deliver retinoid benefits while being formulated with a more tolerable approach to help minimize irritation. And that matters because the best skincare product is the one you will actually use consistently. Not the one sitting untouched in your bathroom cabinet because you tried it twice and your face decided it was entering witness protection. Consistency wins.

The “fall refresh” does not have to mean more. Because one of my favorite things about aesthetics is that a good treatment plan doesn't start with a shopping list. It starts with an assessment. Maybe you need a little tox. Maybe you need strategic filler. Maybe your skin needs a serious retinol intervention. Maybe you need all three. Or maybe your face is doing just fine and you need nothing at all. The artistry is knowing the difference.

My approach is always to look at the big picture—facial movement, anatomy, proportions, skin quality, lifestyle, and your long-term goals—rather than chasing every line or imperfection we see in the mirror. Because the goal isn't to look different. The goal is to look like the best, most refreshed version of yourself.

So as we head into fall, consider this your reminder to reset your skincare, reassess your aesthetic goals, and make a plan that actually makes sense for your face. And yes, you can absolutely reorganize your closet afterward. One fall refresh at a time.
